Milling Wood: process boundaries

Define the process before choosing tools

This is a planning note, not an operating procedure or a guarantee that a particular machine can perform this task. The previous cross-material tool list, techniques and HowTo markup have been removed. Identify the exact material grade, coatings and contamination; obtain the machine and consumable manufacturer's instructions for that material and operation.

Wood dust, work holding, guarding and extraction need assessment for the actual machine. A metalworking cutter or abrasive is not automatically appropriate for wood.

HSE woodworking

Rotating machinery creates an entanglement hazard. Do not wear gloves near a rotating drill, spindle, tool or workpiece. Secure the work and use the specified guards; stop and isolate before clearing chips or adjustment. Gloves for handling sharp stock while stopped are a separate task-specific decision.

For cutting, grinding, sanding and finishing, check that the exact blade, wheel, abrasive or coating is rated for the material and machine. Assess dust, fume, ignition, noise and chemical exposure; PPE alone is not a substitute for the appropriate process controls.
